Radha Kalluri, PhD, Assistant Professor in the Departments of Otolaryngology and Biomedical Engineering, Zilkha Neurogenetic Institute, will be presenting.
Sensory transduction in the auditory and vestibular systems of the inner ear is accomplished by specialized mechano-transducing cells (hair cells) and their bipolar neuronal partners. This fundamental unit of transduction is similar accross the two sensory systems, but each system had unique specializations to support their sensory goals, The research Kalluri's laboratory focuses on understanding the anatomical and biophysical mechanisms that ultimately shape and organize sensory signaling within the inner ear. Dr. Kalluri's talk will focus on emerging work from her laboratory showing that a previously unappreciated diversity in the ion-channel properties of inner-ear afferent neurons can shape their functions.
